ABOUT THE CONFERENCE
The FIEPS Congresses are organised by the International Federation of Physical and Sports Education (Fédération Internationale d'Education Physique et Sportive - FIEPS), which was founded in 1923 and it is the oldest institution in the field of Physical Education. The FIEPS European Congress is the main annual event in Europe, and it has been held in different countries around Europe over the course of many years. The Congress was formerly known as the FIEP Congress, and in 2021, the name of the Federation was changed to FIEPS (International Federation of Physical and Sports Education). Previously, I had the opportunity to present scientific research at the 2017 FIEP European Congress in Luxembourg, the 2018 FIEP European Congress, in Istanbul (Turkey), and the 2021 FIEP European Congress (vurtually). This year the 15th Euroepan Congress is finally being held in Vierumaki (Finland) after being previously cancelled in 2020 due to the COVID pandemic.
I presented research on our new 10m shuttle run test software during the 15th FIEPS European Congress & 32nd FIEPS World Congress in Vierumaki, Finland. The abstract and our presentation are both available for download on this page. After the 2022 FIEPS Congress, this study will be built upon further based on the received feedback, and the full data will be published in an international journal.

COMPARISON OF 10M AND 20M SHUTTLE RUN TESTS FOR THE ASSESSMENT OF AEROBIC FITNESS IN ADOLESCENT MALE HOCKEY PLAYERS

The most widely applied test for the assessment of aerobic fitness in adolescents is the 20m shuttle run test (SRT). However, many schools and clubs lack adequate space to administer the test, and an alternative 10m SRT has been adapted. PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to compare the 10m SRT and 20 SRT for the assessment of aerobic fitness in adolescent male hockey players.
This study comprised 41 junior hockey players (mean age of 13.6±1.1) from Bulgaria. Height and weight of the players were measured. All participants were tested with the 20m BeepShuttle Junior software and the 10m Beep Test software. Both software calculated predicted VO2max based on the Leger’s equation, and percentile scores based on international norms.
The hockey players achieved significantly better results of aerobic fitness when tested with the 20m SRT vs the 10m SRT (53.2 ± 5.5 vs 46.4 ± 4.5 ml/kg/min respectively, p < 0.001). The mean percentile scores were also significantly better when tested with the 20m SRT vs 10m SRT (83.9 ± 20.4 and 57.8 ± 23.8 respectively). All of the other parameters of the tests (stage, shuttle, distance, duration and achieved speed) were also greater with the 20m SRT vs 10m SRT. These findings suggested that the additional turn in each shuttle, that the subject had to make during the 10m SRT, produced greater fatigue and worsens the final results of the participants.
Testing participants with specialised software which provides good audio-visual animation was highly convenient and comprehensive. The adapted 10m SRT is a useful alternative for schools and clubs with smaller gymnasiums. However, the calculation of VO2max should be adjusted in order to accurately predict the actual values.
